Uusimaa Rock Data Hall
A data hall seventy-two metres down in granite, cooled by the rock and a lake.
Uusimaa, Finland · 2021–2025

A data hall excavated in granite beneath a pine forest in southern Finland, seventy-two metres below the forest floor.
The rock holds a steady temperature, and water drawn from a lake nearby carries the heat away, so the hall uses a fraction of the cooling energy of a building on the surface. Its waste heat warms the nearest town’s district heating network. A single glass portal in a rock cutting is all that shows above ground.
